Fiberglassing Pygmy deck

In the Pygmy directions it says to overlap the deck fiberglass 2" next to the cockpit and towards the bow, I have seen this done on someone else's boat and it turned out badly, the seam was raised and discolored. What I want to do is not overlap but instead cut a z formation in the fiberglass so the two pieces overlap beside each other, but not on top. This seems to me like it could work, any engineers out there that can help? Any other suggestions? Thanks.
