OK, I really hate to sound like your mother, but for a first outing, solo, for a maiden boat and virgin kayaker, these conditions were a recipe for disaster.
Please exercise at least as much care and forethought in your paddling as you did in your building. Aside from flammables and power tools, the WORST screw up while building will at least leave you with a very handsome planter. Any paddling mishap alone in icy open water, and the only thing being planted will be your well-preserved corpse!
