I've been very happy with my Toyota Corolla wagon. I can put 4 boats on the roof and 4 people in the car with gear for a week.

I prefer a car over a truck or van because it is much easier to load boats on the lower car roof rack. Since I have the roof rack, carrying lumber is no problem. And I get 30+ mpg with 4 boats on the roof. I scrape bottom getting to some put-ins, but generally all I need is a little care to avoid it.
