No I don't mean hitting people with your rudder, which at times might be appropriate.
I mean the act of propelling the craft forward with the rudder.
Has anyone tried it? You obviously need a different type of rudder. In a WoodenBoat article a while back there was a man ( sorry magazine collection back in Dallas ) who built lake craft that look like a lapstrake Mill Creek with an unusual attachment. I was a rudder that could propel the craft forward by skulling. It had a shark fin like attachment that was hinged, for kickup purposes to a flexible arm. So when swung back and forth is allowed to craft to be propelled forward like a fish.
There has been some talk on the BB about this before. Looks like when combined with a paddle you could get some real locomotion going. Not only could you rudder the offset of the paddle stroke but you would be generating forward motion at the same time. Pluse it would give your feet some exersise.
Looks easy enough to build, will give it a wirl.
