I build a sheet of short and full length strips across the hole I've cut out using just wood glue to hold them together. About every third or fourth strip is full length across the cockpit. I also staple only about every third or fourth strip.

When the glue dries, I mark from underneath, cut out with a sabre saw and use thickened epoxy and sanding dust to glue the cutout in place.
