It is possible to add enough micro-balloons to epoxy that it is less dense than wood, yet still flows. As long as you are making this chunk in the end the same size, the epoxy can be lighter than wood.
I do have a concern about water getting trapped in and around a wood chunk. An epoxy endpour is less likely to have spaces which can trap water.
