I'm not an old hand, but I do have a hard chined boat. It's traveled many a mile sitting on its flat bottom which rests right on the flat crossmembers of my roofrack. Cinched down front and rear to the bumpers, with a third belly band going through the windows. I've had no problems whatsoever with this.
