I can imagine spending $100 for the first paddle and much less thereafter. I am building one now. I spent $30 for a quality piece of wood (8 feet of clear cedar 2X6), $20 for some big ass C-clamps to clamp wood to a $10 flu liner which I use to keep paddle blank from moving when I carve it, $35 for a drawknife to carve it, somewhere around $10 for sharpening instruments to keep drawknife blade sharp, and probably around $10 for a few packs of sandpaper for my orbital sander. I suspect I am not through spending money as I will probably apply some paint and maybe glass to paddle or at least blades, and whatever doesn't get painted will probably get tung oiled. My next paddle, however, should only cost however much I spend on wood.
