I used sitka spruce, red and yellow cedar, mahogany, epoxie and varnish. I didn't get everything right the first time and wasted some materials. The trade off was better materials bought in small quanities from a retail supply for time not spent scrounging for scraps or the lowest price. I probably have enough wood to make one more.
Kayakers I respect like my paddle and that gives me a feeling of pride. I enjoy the feel of the paddle in my hands. I enjoyed the process of making it. These things make it worth while for me.
Everyone has their own internal time/cost/benefit formula.
You could use a closet pole and plywood.
My point; The paddle is a big part of the kayaking experience so why not invest your time in something appropriate to your other equipment? Why not make the best paddle you can instead of the cheapest?
