I used CLC's method on my boat last year, and I'll second Chris's recommendation. The webbing loops are low profile, and don't kick any more spray than the bungie does. They are safe and won't cut or gouge you when rolling or handling your boat.

However, flush-mounted (or below-deck) fittings look REALLY great and really add a custom touch to your beautiful wood boat. Now if someone could find a way to keep them from holding water...hmmm..
