I bought some nice fittings from Vittudens (http://www.vitudden.com/deck_fit.htm) - they are excellant since the rounded bottoms keep water from collecting. Well worth the money (about $3 each).

But, if you wanted you could make similar ones from wood by using a round bottom router bit to cut a round bottom recess, then a holesaw to cut out around the recess, then drill hole thru edge to put rod thru. Would look something like the picture I drew below...
