At this point why not consider building a folding boat. You could construct the frame in the basement ( summer or winter) assuming you have a reasonable sized workspace. Then, dismantle it to take it out of the basement. If you use wood, carry it to your favorite outside location for sealing and painting, and you don't have fumes in the house. Add a fabric cover outside, too.

The folding boat will travel in your trunk, the bed of a pickup, or inside a car or van. No added wind resistance. No worries about damage or theft of your rack while you are on the water.

If building one seems like a daunting task, perhaps you might consider renting one for the few occasions when you need an extra boat? While it would probably not be cheap, you would save money and construction time and be able to try out another design for an extended period.
