Definitely kick back and read Nick's book. I guarantee you'll read it with a smile on your face in anticipation of building. There are a few other books available that describe strip building, but Nick's is the only one (I think) that is dedicated to building kayaks. In my opinion, it also has the best illustrations, by far. If you never read any of the other books, you'll be well equipped to build your first boat.

There aren't any major tools required unless you plan to cut/mill your own strips. In that case you will a tablesaw or bandsaw to cut the strips, and a router and some bits if you want to use bead & cove strips. You may choose to buy all your materials in kit form, in which case you'll only need a few hand tools to build the boat (refer to Nick's book).

As to which boat to build, you'll have to decide what kind of paddling you will be doing. The designs in Nick's book provide a good place to start your evaluation. If you're not sure, just pick one that appeals to you and start. There's no need to really agonize over the decision of which boat to choose. It won't likely be the last kayak you build.

Good luck and don't be scarce. You've found a bbs with a lot of friendly people willing to give good advice. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions.
