Here are some important ideas to consider:
a) Someone else noted earlier that skegs or rudders should be the weak point in the system and not their attachments. This probably cannot be over emphasized.
b) Here is a simpler skeg box construction process:
- Use 3 (4) layers of corrugated card rather than foamcore.
- Glue onto a flat surface (ply etc.). Put release on the flat surface.
- Glue in the dowels and glass box and flange. Let cure
- Throw into a bucket of water. When glue all soft, dig out the smegma in box. Drill and finish box as before.
- Mount from INSIDE - either butter flange bottom w/ epoxy & microballoons, or best is to butter flange w/ silicone. Set in place and clean up around and i/s immediately. The silicone method will give a huge shock absorption capacity to the box.
- I'm not sure how much friction is necessary to keep a skeg deployed, but you can adjust by tightening the collars on the cable or by using large washers on ea. side of the skeg and using an axle that has screw flanges (or use wedges) on ea. side.
