Nick's book is perfect for what you are looking for.

If you are going to be a navel architect or materials scientist you could certainly delve more deeply into the technical stuff. But for a novice to intermediate builder, I've read many of the building books, and found Nick's to be right on target.

Someone here posted a suggestion that you START with a book on composites - I think that was misguided advice for the novice builder.
