Water on the wave face moves up the wave. When your boat is parallel to the wave on the wave face, a rudder or skeg is sticking down into this upward moving water while the boat is trying to move down the wave. This will have two possible effects, it may steer you back towards perpendicular to the wave (good), or it will try to flip the boat over as the skeg tries to move up with the water and your head tries to move down with gravity (bad).
