Part of building a boat without a strongback is the possibility of twist sneaking in. Even frames will not completely eliminate the possibility of twist, unless they are fastened to a strongback. One of the nice thinks about stitch-and-glue kayaks is that they are easy to built, compared to other types of boats, and they do not require strongbacks. But they do require checking for twist. The CLC technique of winding identifies twist quickly and makes it easy to correct. One reason for checking for twist with the boat right-side-up is that once the boat is trued up the joints are ready to be filleted and taped, which locks in any twist or lack thereof.
