Fish are not capable of rotating their scales to match all flows. They do have a flexible skin, which works nicely, as well a spine. That was what I was commenting on. I'm not about to go carving groves in my hull. I am also aware that a smooth hard surface is not the end all be all of perfect hydrodynamics.
