Oak, walnut AND fir! Wow, sounds beefy! Why not use them on the Kootenai? :) So far, my paddle has held up well. I have pushed off of rocks (when the water is too shallow to pry or draw) and I have little more than scratches.
You know, I just had the same thought last night of using my blanks for canoe paddles...too bad I don't know anyone who needs canoe paddles!
