Flagship Varnish

This is probably a dumb question but since i payed dearly for my quart of Captians Flagship Varnish and don't want do the wrong thing, here is my delema.Wanting to only thin out part of the varnish in the 1 quart can for some test pieces I poured about 20% of it into a glass jar that has a heavy glass lid, but i guess the contianer let in enough air over a period of 5 days to skim the surface to kind of a gell like coating about a 1/16 th of an inch thick. Is it OK to just scoop out this drying gell and pour back the remiander into the can and I guess I should do my thinning in the can were the lid stays tight.Thanks alot
