I laid wet glass on both sides of the tip (with plenty of excess), covered the whole thing with wax paper, sandwiched it between 1" slabs of minicell foam, sandwiched THAT with boards, and squeezed the dickens out of the whole mess with clamps. It worked great and has withstood learning to roll in the pool (lots of banging off the bottom) and general abuse.
