I like that idea. It seems like a hassle and extra weight to carry around, but would definitely be secure.

I put my cable loop in the front of my deckbeam to "keep the honest people honest". If someone really likes wooden boats and wants your kayak, they probably won't damage it trying to steal it. If someone just wants to vandalize it, they won't care if there is a club or theft protection device, they'll just gouge the shit out of it with a tire iron, and may or may not steal it.

If you're out camping, consider that a lot of people are afraid of kayaks, so they may not just paddle it away. Also consider that a wooden kayak is very conspicuous, and would draw a lot of attention if stolen (as it does when you're out paddling!), plus the fact that someone would have to have a roof-rack to cart off a 17'-18' boat. At home, I just keep it hung up in the garage behind lock & key.

I think minimum protection is all that is required, but is required. Shawn
