I used 1/4" crown staples, 3/4" long, through a scrap strip of 3/4" redwood. They make a nice pair of little holes that match all the other nice pairs of little holes... The scrap strip leaves about 3/16" of staple sticking up when you remove it. This made the staples easy to pull without damaging the surrounding deck.
