Howdy all-- The April 1999 issue of WoodenBoat has instructions on how to build a finishing plane from a mild steel channel, a piece of hardwood, and various small pieces of mild steel.

If you're in need of a plane and a small project it looks like fun.

I'm thinking about modifying the design slightly to make more of a block plane. Tomorrow I'll have to run around town and see if any of the tool stores have plane blades and I'll build the plane around it.
