I don't know how helpful this is but the Woodenboat January/February 1995 issue has a piece by Rob Bryan on a retractable skeg for a sea kayak. I haven't tried it so caveat emptor. I am very jealous of you in Hawaii while I continue my Northwestern rain odessy.
