I installed the skeg from WB-95 in my Tursiops. It works great in giving straight-tracking ability to a wide-beam manoueverable hull.
I also have a skeg installed in my Rob Bryan Seguin,it's slightly different in shape, but is just as good. In the Seguin it's only needed for adjusting to side wind and sea, not for tracking.
I should think placing it as far backwards as possible is the right way to do it. On the Seguin, which is 17'10", I think it's placed around 2' from the stern. Easiest way of operation is a thin bungee chord stretched from the stern above deck to pull the skeg down + a line running forward above deck to be fixed in a cleat beside the cockpit to haul the skeg up.
The skeg box should penetrate the deck and hull to best avoid creating leaks that must be fixed working inside the aft room. Believe me, I've had the experience.
