Hi Dave,

I seem to remember reading an article some where, might have been New Scientist magazine, on coating hull surfaces with a water repellant substance to make them more efficient. The results of the study suggested that this only created friction and actually slowed the boat a little. The author claimed that the water clinging to the hull in a very thin layer actually resulted in less friction and a more efficient hull speed. Apparently there was some sort of hydrodynamic explaination, tho it was a little over my head at the time (I was only a first year university student).

Its been years since I read it, and my recollection of the article is hazy at best. Of corse now that I've 'discovered' boat building, I'd be really interested to read it again, or to hear from anyone else who knows about this phenomenon.

Paul.
