You should be able to go to an outdoor store & see what kind of no rack setups they have for canoes(usually foam blocks that go between gunnel & car). I've used similar setups for sailboards, and could probably rig something similar with a kayak. With this method you're pretty much tying down the boat from each end to the bumper.(although I have also sent a line thru the inside of the vehicle & then rolled the windows up)

This has worked successfully, although it's good practice to recheck connections after moving the vehicle. And it does take more time to setup. It depends how often you'll be cartopping, and how far you need to travel, and at what speeds.

I must say though, I've made the investiment for Yakima racks. And they've been on 4 cars over 12 years. Yes, I need to buy new adapter kits for each new vehicle. But I've never regretted the money that I've spent on it. And they have come in extremely handy for boats, skiis, snowboards, bikes, furniture...
