There is a book about sea kayaking disasters called "Deep Trouble." A lot of the stories end in the death of the kayakers. There is something to be learned by reading these stories. One thing is that a lot of the people who died did not have positive flotation in their boats. Good bulkheads are the best kind of flotation you can have. There is no way you can forget to put them in when you are packing for a trip.

I have a Patuxent 17.5 with front and rear bulkheads and VCP hatches. It is a very nice boat with excellent straight-line speed. It does seem to be a little trim sensitive; I find it handles better if I put most of my gear in the rear hatch.
