Another option to yard sales is to check the newsletters and listservers in the area, John. There are a lot of old racks taking up garage space, and soliciting these lists might work, too.
Also, on 28 March, East of Maui is having a swap meet in the parking lot at their Annapolis store. While these folks tend to cater to surfers and windsurfers more than they do kayaks --- they limit themselves to SOTs --- the go-fast guys still have to carry their gear around, and I'd bet you'd see some racks for sale, too. If you can go with a gutter-mounted rack, definitely do it. Yak will tell you the same thing --- it's their strongest mounting system.
