If I was in you shoes, I would probably make a few scarfs out of some scrap with the same thickner. Once they're hardned, I would experiment with them. You can make a bad situation worse by sanding through the veneer on the good panels. With the experimantal scarfs, you can see if you can sand them clear or if you can fake it with some epoxy tinted with fine sawdust etc.

I think painted hard chine hulls with clear decks look great!
