Thanks to all that gave their opinions on rub rails. Now, two new questions>

1. I believe I know how to make flush hatches- but are they watertight? I made non-flush hatches with straps and weather stripping on an earlier boat and they are not water tight. Will flush hatches be even worse?

2. How much interlux paint should I buy for a 17' Cheasapeak- planning on painting keel to shear line? What kind of primer? How much varnish for just the deck?
