I have done several kayaks with veneer inlays (onlays) on the decks of my stitch and glue boats. Varying succsess. Tips include: -Skimcoat your deck first to keep the "wet-out" of the plywood uniform and reduce problems with excess adhesive used to apply veneer. -try veneer edging (sold in most lumber stores as edging for shelves) as a detail stripe. -use vaccuum bagging system to hold large veneers un place as the adhesive (epoxy) cures. -i have used CA glue (super glue) to bond small veneers successfuly and quickly. -overcoat veneer and entire area or entire deck with thin layer of fiberglass.
problems include: -excess glue discoloring area around veneer. -air bubbles around veneer. -sanding dust trapped around veneer sealed in place with over coat of fiberglass and epoxy. -sanding through veneer in places.
My brother nick and I have done a number of veneers on strippers too and they sure dress up a boat. good luck
