Shawn, I think you did the right thing filling the weave in the cockpit area. I did and I'am glad I did. The unfilled weave is abrasive and will hold mud and dirt which will eventually wear into the thin wet out coat exposing the glass. A couple thin coats will fill the weave and add very little weight.
