We think alike, as I did the same with my Ches16. This made for a nice straight, smooth ply appearance on the outside, which I think, is very attractive.
I finished off the heavy sanding with the top single piece coaming glued on. I used heavy 60 grit "barrel" sanders attached to a power drill to sand the inner side of the coaming and deck. Still lots of work, but the smooth, correctly beveled layered inner edge looks great.
