Especially with the plywood bulkhead, you are creating a sealed compartment. Changes in air pressure from temperature fluctuations (sitting out in the sun, dunking in cold water) can create some pretty phenomonal forces. Previous discussion on this subject have suggested solutionas as simple drilling a very small (1/64in) vent hole or making a larger hole and plugging it with a cork.
