Hi Don,
My dad once built a mahogany table that he he caused to darken by rubbing it in a solution I don't remember. It could have been lye, I just can't recall. I thought he had built a tent and placed some ammonia on a rag inside the tent with the table, but it's been a very long time so I'm not sure.
The result though, was wood that was BLACK. I'd expereiment with a small piece and after treating let it sit for a day or so to make sure it won't darken any more.
