Bob, I'am in the process of building the cart that is on the CLC site.(Scottish method) I will be modifying it though. The wheels they call for are too small for my use. I made a cart that uses small wheels and they get hung up on everything but smooth surfaces.
My cart will be wider and instead of a wood cross piece I'am using a aluminum 2x4 24" long. I want it to be wider than the boat so I can use much larger wheels, either 10" soft pneumatic or 12" spoked pneumatic.(Northen Hydraulics or Harbor Frt.). The 2 pieces of wood that are used to support the kayak on the top of the cross bar I will make longer, probably 30-36" and will also be aluminum. They will be too long to fold like the CLC description but will be removeable. Instead of pipe insulation on these supports to protect the boat I will use pool noodles cut to fit over the 1-1/2" sq. alum. tubing. The rest of the design will be the same.
The CLC cart looks like a simple design that is easy to build and wont cost very much whether you build exact or modify for rougher terrain as I am doing. In either case the cart will fit inside the boat. I will probably sew up a heavy duty bag to hold all the components when disassembled. The CLC cart folds and may not have to be disassembled to fit inside hatch. Buying the plans from CLC would probably make the job easier.
I will post pics when finished.
