The best product I've found for removing a wide variety of adhesive residues (old price tages, masking tape, etc.) is called "Bestine." It's typically found in art/drafting supply stores and is generally used as a rubber cement thinning agent/adhesive remover. (I've even used it to clean off excess mounting adhesive from the edges of photographic prints with absolutely no damage to the print.)
