Well isn't that a kick in the butt, I've made several paddles which when completed are fully coated with West System Epoxy which is then sanded down to a minimal thickness over the wood and then coated with Epifanes with excellent results. Who can get a mirror finish with only one coat of varnish? One paddle has been used for a season and has been recoated to ensure no breaks in the varnish especially on the edges. I do admitt the paddle is treated very carefully, it isn't used to ward off barnacled rocks and things but I think the finish has been excellent.
