Thanks, I puzzled about the bow for the whole duration of the project and then I was playing with my brother's dog and his nose gave me that idea.
The raised rib was just my way of raising the rear deck for a little more storage space instead of sloping back up or doing a higher deck and a cutout to inset the cockpit. It also might be someplace to attach some hardware in the future. I found a nice piece of redwood that was well over 50 years old and weighed almost nothing due to total moisture loss so I decided to stick it there.
The internal hatch is 4 carved wooden blocks glued to the inside of the hull. The bungee runs through the blocks and thru 2 small blocks on the hatch cover. There is a cable attached to the bungee that goes through the bulkhead and can be pulled tight to put tension on the bungee and is hooked inside the cockpit. Sort of a trunk release. When the cable is loose the hatch can be completly removed.
