Hi Buzzy, I just started rehab-ing my Chesapeake 3 weeks ago. A random-orbit sander is an invaluable aid in this task. One thing I found that might help you is that when you're sanding the varnish, it appears whitish. When you sand through all of it and hit the epoxy below, it appears _really_ white. If you keep sanding here, sooner than later, you'll sand into the weave of your glass. Don't do that, or you'll be back to epoxying and sanding the epoxy.

Varnish "yellows" slightly with age. If you sand the varnish and sand completely through in spots, and start re-varnishing, you'll have light-colored blotches where there is no old, colored varnish below. Not a serious thing, but it does look kind of funny.
