Protection for tip of bow?

The very tips of the bow and stern are particularly hard to glass around, and are easy to damage if you happen to run into anything non-liquid. I'd be interested in hearing how people have protected this area. A couple solutions I've seen is to use hardwood for the tip (like Edgar's latest boat) and using some kind of protective metal guard over the very tip (did I see this on one of Jay's boats?). What are some other methods? Thanks,
