Why not make ypur greenland stle paddle out of some harder but eqaully as light (or close to it) Hardwood. They would be far stronger, look better and be something you can be proud of. I teach courses in making paddles and among other (like Spruce, and White Pine for the cheap) we use Spanish Cedar, Mahogany, and my current favorites Cherry, Walnut and Sassafrass. AL
