I think Nick designed the double without the cockpit recess. In other words, the coaming rises up right out of the line of the deck, around the cockpit opening. I'd think that one of the main reasons for having a recess would be to lower the cockpit rim, allowing for easier rolling, and more room for maneuvering (leaned turns, etc.). Since you'll probably be less likely to roll a double (or rely heavily on leaned turns with a partner for that matter), I'd think that putting a recess on the double would be just a matter of taste.

I think the recess looks cool, but I may not put one on if I build the double, as the extra room would be nice.
