Personally I would put this on the underside of the cockpit, in a place that is not visable to a casual inspection. The main purpose is identification of the owner, and if the case was theft, I would not want the new "owner" just sanding the HIN off, so my theory is to engrave it into the wood, in a place that is not obvious, or easy to get to. The coast guard may have a regulation that I don't know about which requires placement of the H.I.N. in a certain location...That's my input.
