"no shiny spots" is an ideal. a little piece of 220 grit on the end of your finger is fine for areas that the sanding block or power sander don't get. the thing that I found that works well is to stay away from all the edges while sanding. STAY AWAY. Then go back with a gentle hand and a piece of folded sandpaper. By now you must have figured that there are a few choice places on your kayak where large area sanding techniques cause boo boos. So stay away from them and go back after lunch or when you are most focused.
