I built mine from 300 denier nylon packcloth for my Chesapeake 17. I cut an oval the exact size and shape of the cockpit and then cut a 3" wide strip that I folded in half, and sewed around the perimeter of the oval. I ran some 5/16" bungie through this tunnel. I have yet to seal the seams, but I'll probably either cut some more nylon and glue it ("taped seams") around the seam, or use some seam seal.
I cut a 10" tall tunnel that was about 2" bigger than my waist size. It fits a bit snug, but I like it that way.
The next one will be out of neoprene, as Walbridge describes in the "Boatbuilder's Manual".
