The taping of the interior seams of my Guillemot Expedition Single is on the horizon and I have a question about a product I found at my local fiberglass supplier (Fiberlay, Seattle, WA, www.fiberlay.com) It is bidirectional tape stitchbonded to a chopped strand mat. It is available in various widths from 4" to 50". Product # 155170850 - DBM 17:08.
My question is this. Is this a good answer to the needs of this task? Strength from bidirectional tape. No need to cut my own and have irregular unravelling edges. Can I use one single layer of tape on the inside? How wide? 4"? Two layers of different widths? Cut my own tape from the remnants of the deck/hull cloth? Will it be sufficiently transparent and otherwise smooth and fair for the exterior seams? The chopped strand backing seems to give the tape considerable bulk. The 17:08 reference means 17 oz/sq.yd. roving with 0.75 oz/sq.ft. CS mat on back. They claim the backing results in more efficient use of the resin due to fewer voids between fibers where resin can pool.
Thanks in advance.
