I would suggest the kit, especcially if you are short on time. I built a Patuxent 19.5 from a kit (not only my first boat, my first woodworking experience), and finished it, including 7 coats of varnish, in under 7 weeks, about 85 hrs total working time. It came out great, and was worth building.
